Slaying the Ghost – Double Century Cycle Race 2014
What a day! The ghost of 2012 Coronation Double Century has firmly been slain. The monkey is off our back. The NH team rode strong and well despite punctures and a mechanical failure. Each member was forced to dig deep. The reward was a double medal – one for completing and the other for completing together. Stunning stuff. The 202 km was completed in 7 hours 40 minutes.

We rested the day after climbing Mont Ventoux and spent time in the beautiful town of Annecy with its magnificent lake and scenic surrounding mountain range. In accomplishing this feat, the team agreed to raise funds for Rhinos who are being decimated by poaches for their horns.

Brett Murray’s satirical and provocative 1.85m portrait of President Jacob Zuma titled “Spear” part of a body of political work entitled “Hail to the Thief II”, which was displayed at the Goodman Gallery in 2012, caused much mayhem as well as philosophical debates.
The portrait depicts me in a manner that suggests I am a philanderer, a womaniser and one with no respect. It is an undignified depiction of my personality and seeks to create doubt about my personality in the eyes of fellow citizens, family and children – Jacob Zuma
I was inspired to write this poem as I watched the event and debates unfold.
