The lock down, imposed by government to curtail the spread of the Covid-19 virus, allowed me to watch my first full feature 4k Ultra HD and Blu-Ray film (equipment installed by Multiroom AV). We watched Robin Hood, a creatively made modern version, which casts an array of talented actors with a script of more poignant depth than we’d seen of previous takes. Taron Egerton (Robin),  Jamie Foxx (John), Eve Hewson (Marian), Tim Minchin (Friar Tuck) and Ben Mendelsohn (Sheriff of Nottingham) complimented each other in this fast action movie.

What an overwhelming experience. It kept us on the edge of our seats, fully engaged and exhausted to the end. This is what movies are meant to do. To transport you into its weaving narrative and immerse you into its meandering pathways. This it does superbly with obvious technology help from both Dolby Atmos, 4k and crisp camera work. The sound was all engulfing as arrows darted – one from behind, another top right, then bottom left and then dead centre with a blistering thud. Woosh. The pounding of horses hooves reverberated just  as much as Robin’s deep sigh. The camera work was magical in that it showed what it needed, leaving out stuff that is best imagined. Almost like a book but not. In your face, then distant, then a more comfortable distance. The picture was deep as we immersed ourselves into its detail whether it be the castle or the scenes of many battles.

If not you, then who?

If not now, then when?

Director, Otto Barthurst, rescued the myth of Robin Hood from poor prior renditions and propelled it into something more meaningful and relevant. Almost a prequel, the beginning of the myth of Robin Hood we know. We only get a small glimpse of Sherwood Forest towards the end as Robin and his merry band flee into exile.

Fear is the greatest weapon in God’s arsenal, it is why the Church concocted hell.

The film grapples with interesting themes – critique of the Church, the Crusaders, the powerful, the racists and the sexists. Robin’s mentor is Yahya (John) an Arab whose son Robin tries to save. Jamie Foxx plays a sterling role as the mentor, directing Robin’s personal and political growth. Marian’s character is a fascinating modern depiction of a strong woman in her own right, defined on her terms irrespective of the males around her.

On a negative note, the script does have many clichés. However, the actors’ silences and oration counter balances this and powerfully deliver the epic to the gasping audience. Furthermore, the film has a dark and grim feel. Finding the balance is probably the sequels challenge.
