Death of an Idealist: In Search of Neil Aggett by Beverly NaidooFeatured

He died, again. From 22nd September 1981 until 5th February 1982 much happened. I was preparing for my matric exam, which I wrote then rewrote late into December as most exam papers were leaked. I then waited anxiously for my results, celebrating on the streets of Durban after obtaining my university exemption. This excitement dissipated when the then minister of education, yes FW de Klerk, refused my application to study at Wits. And, Apartheid was not a crime against humanity? However, unbeknownst to my little insular world, more than 60 activists were being rounded up and ruthlessly tortured culminating in Dr Neil Agget’s untimely death. It also set the decisive beginning of the end of apartheid.

Cycling SafetyFeatured

Crashes. Accidents. Safety. These are themes that crop up usually when one of us is involved in such incidents or we witness one. Responses range from ‘cycling is too dangerous’ to ‘it won’t happen to me’. Neither of which illustrate the nuance or depth of cycling safety.

Rugby World Cup MomentsFeatured

Euphoria probably best sums what a nation feels when winning something like the rugby world cup. Crowds erupted in thunderous applause and ululation from the stadium in Zwide to the streets of Soweto. Coming a day after Moody’s served a negative investment grade credit rating, some positive news was indeed needed. The Springboks were brutally physical and doggedly clinical in overwhelming favourites England.

Come to my Memorial, I may just be thereFeatured

Miriam Abrams and I accompanied several academics in 2003 who were pioneering multi disciplinary research at a place called Makapansgat in Limpopo. Over 150 years ago, thousands of Ndebele died of starvation in the month-long siege by the Voortrekkers.  Fossils dating back 3.3 million years have been found preserving a unique record of hominid habitation. After the paleontologist, archaeologist, geologist, chemist, social anthropologist and other academics spoke about their research interests, Miriam and I sat on some rocks eating our sandwiches while debating the existence of the soul. She argued that the caves were filled with the souls of the dead. I playfully jotted some of these words and we both had a good laugh. I revisited these words when she passed away in 2011 remembering her zest for life, political acumen, culinary skills, vast reading portfolio, among other passions and interests, and, our deep friendship which I still miss.

L’Alpe d’HuezFeatured

We rested the day after climbing Mont Ventoux and spent time in the beautiful town of Annecy with its magnificent lake and scenic surrounding mountain range. Annecy on the south eastern part of France is also close to the Swiss border and a definitive place to place on ones itinerary with it’s old town with cobbled streets, winding canals, quaint cafes and colourful houses.

Les Homme Fols de VentouxFeatured

After successfully completing the Hotchillee London to Paris tour, elated, we departed the next morning south towards the Alps. We divided into three groups with a large sprinter taking our bikes and some bags and another vehicle the remaining luggage. Four of us left on the train with the aim to meet the rest in Lyon where we stayed overnight before tackling the mountain we romanticised about from the minute we were hooked onto cycling.

Hotchillee London to Paris Cycle TourFeatured

The Stabus Rhino peloton team comprising Riaz “Modster” Paruk (captain), Owen “Cutesee” Coetzee, Miriam “Momster” Desai and Fazel “Charles” Mayet, and the Faitz Rhino Peloton team comprising Arshad “Cherry“ Tayob (Captain), Zahid “Brandster” Moola, Ismail ”Isco” Ebrahim and Zunaid “Gangster“ Tayob departed for the not so warm island town of London on 16th June 2013. Their aim was to complete the Hotchillee London to Paris Tour followed by some climbing in the French Alps (Mont Ventoux and Col du Telegraph, Col du Galabier and L’Alpe d’Huez). In accomplishing this feat, the team agreed to raise funds for Rhinos who are being decimated by poaches for their horns.

Reading and Reflection

After absorbing the lyrically beautiful and profound but chilling “Human Acts” and “At Night All Blood is Black“, I turned to “The Near North” for a respite before delving into the “Seven Moons“. While welcomed, it was at first surprisingly out of place and came across as piddling, trivial, almost irrelevant. I persevered, desperately needing a diversion. If only, to better absorb the trauma and themes hidden in Kang and Diop’s stories.

Mad Men’s 2024 Double Century Tale

Through Swellendam’s early morning hue,

Eleven friends, a daring crew.

The “Mad Men” set out to conquer the race,

With grit and glory etched on each face.

Up Trudouw Pass, they began their flight,

A scenic path bathed in golden light.

Through Barrydale’s charm and Montagu’s grace,

The brutal climbs were no easy pace.

Effervescent Mitha, the surrogate guide,

Earned “Man of the Ride” with heartfelt pride.

Yet Arshad, the captain, with wisdom so fine,

Was the mastermind behind their shine.

Siraaj surged, besting his past,

While Ziyaad’s first effort was a standout blast.

Motor-mouth Bera, with banter on spree,

Nearly drowned the chatter of Mills with glee.

Zahid, so elegant, steady and grand,

Paired with Isco, the Silent Assassin’s hand.

Their power surged, their cadence flowed,

Their efforts lifted the team on the road.

But alas, not all saw the finish line—

Bash, Luqman, Mota, missed the climb.

Fazel pressed on, though near his brink,

While others soared, they stopped to think.

Six hours and fifty-one minutes flew,

202 kilometers conquered, the Mad Men crew.

A weekend etched with laughter and flair,

As plans for next year hang in the air.

To the climbs, the winds, the laughs, the cheers,

This race was a memory for the years.

The Mad Men’s bond, like pedals in motion,

Forever driven by endless devotion.

A Fish Called Fazel

Nervously I entered the mall, walking purposefully but slowly. In the center, between restaurants and the escalator, were two rows of tables with easels placed on each of the small tables. My family dragged me, kicking and screaming, to paint in the ‘fish bowl’. It was Valentine’s Day and not even priority work could save me. I succumbed.

Silent Immersion in Pilanesberg

After a full day and a half of game drives, mostly chasing big cats, we decide to meander, slowly, from the Manyane Gate to exit the Bakubung Gate. Enroute we see elephants. Rhinos. Impalas. Zebras. We see many birds. Burchell’s Coucal. Swainson’s Spurfowl. Helmeted Guinea Fowl. Cape Turtle Dove. Red Finch. Southern Masked Weaver. Lilac Breasted Roller. Go Away Bird. Little Bee Eater. Grey Hornbill. Crested Francolin. Blacksmith Lapwing. Yellow-billed Hornbill. We drive on.

Close the Gap – Double Century Cycle Race 2022

Often it takes several attempts to truly appreciate a race. Such was the impact of this year’s version of the Double Century team cycle event. After our disaster in 2012, our team enjoyed success in 2014 and each year thereafter. I was not a regular participant over the years, but this edition, my fourth, left an indelible mark. It stands, for me, as one of South Africa’s most iconic race and a race one must do, repeatedly.

Hiking in the Amatola Mountains

Driving down to Hogsback in the Eastern Cape for our Covid-19 delayed Amatola hike was delightfully pleasant even the last 48km of gravel. We needed the out. It was great meeting the group especially the Everest Base Camp veterans. We were briefed by Dan Cornick, coordinator of the hike and owner of Away with the Fairies, our stay for the first and last night. We each had loads of questions as he used coloured pens to scribble on the large map – water points, routes, huts, inclines, waterfalls, streams, escape routes etc.
